Dear Potential Donor,
Thank you for your consideration of supporting the goals of Mustaches vs. Cancer and the pediatric department at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). We would like to attempt to answer some of your questions about donation and provide complete transparency of the process. Mustaches vs. Cancer is a charitable event that benefits MSKCC, a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization.
MSKCC is widely recognized as one of the most charitable organizations in the United States, and is one of only five cancer related charities receiving a grade of "A" or better from the
American Institute of Philanthropy.
All donations will be processed one of two ways, either through the website via PayPal or directly through the Annual Giving department at MSKCC. The way you choose to donate may be influenced by the following particulars:
Online Donation Through PayPal
We have set up all donations through mustachesvscancer.org to be processed by PayPal. This option allows for quick easy donation using any major credit card. This will likely be the donation process of choice for those considering giving single donations of less than $100 or multiple donations of small dollar amounts. However, the convenience comes at a price. This option does not allow MSKCC to provide you with a tax exempt letter for the following reasons:
- PayPal is not a non-profit company.
- PayPal charges 2-3% (depending on the total of all donations per month) plus $.30 per transaction. For example, if your donate $10 online, PayPal will keep a maximum $.60 ($.30 + 3%), making the total donation to MSKCC $9.40. The participant, however, will be credited with the full $10.
- MSKCC cannot provide a tax exemption letter because of this convenience charge from PayPal, however, we will be glad to provide a full statement outlining all the fees and the amount donated to MSKCC for your records if requested.
- The only funds that will not go directly to MSKCC will be the price of the custom made bobble-head dolls that are to be presented to the winners. This is expected to be less than 1% of the total donations received.
- This is the best and most convenient option if you, as the donor, are not concerned with your donation's tax-exempt status and would simply like to sponsor a participant quickly and easily.
Donation Directly Through MSKCC's Annual Giving Department
This is the only donation method for all donors seeking a tax exempt letter from MSKCC, and the encouraged donation method for large dollar amount donations. MSKCC will accept donations over the phone with a credit card or by check through the mail. These donations will be accepted during the regular business hours of 9AM-5PM EST. To utilize this method of donation or for any questions concerning MSKCC and their non-profit status can be directed though the Annual Giving Officer handling Mustaches vs. Cancer's donations, Laura Lo Russo, at (646) 227-2567. Be sure to tell her that the donation is on behalf of Mustaches vs. Cancer and the full name of the participant you wish to sponsor. If making your donation by check through the mail, please write “mustaches” in the memo line followed by the participant you are sponsoring, for example, “Mustaches – John Doe”.
